Well it was a great new year, we all dressed up and drank.
I seem to have hit a strange period in my workflow. In the sense that although I have a lot of little ideas for this degree I need to figure out... well what I am going to do for this degree really...
I have a great interest in writing a good story but I want to be a game designer not a storyteller, so in that sense it isn't exactly a fit.
I want to be good at drawing and being able to visually represent my designs but I don't want to just draw stuff for any other reason then to represent the idea.
Also since its games I am invested in its important that I am able to make story that fits and works within the mechanics of games.
On top of all this I want to learn how to make a good puzzle in a murder mystery sense.
Finally I really want to work on CCP related IP, Specifically Wod
Soo what does that leave me with?
1. Want to know how to tell a great story
2. want to be able to visually represent designs
3. Want to be able to make story work in a game and with strong mechanics.
4. I also want to know how to create good puzzles.
5. Want it to be specific to my company IP WoD
How the hell am I going to do this?
Well my latest idea is to create a campaign for the WoD Tabletop system, then turn that game into a campaign setting book, as in a book that somebody would buy so that they could play this game with their friends. The purpose of this is more to showcase and further develop all of the aforementioned skills/ goals, the product itself would be a finalized game somebody could play and enjoy. The book would include characters, setting, maps, artwork, story and sample characters along with snippets of written story version of the game. Hopefully this will allow me to show my storytelling, visual skills, ability to make story fit game mechanics and puzzle building skills, along with fitting directly into the IP for which I one day wish to work on. This is just an idea however I feel it is a strong one. I am confidant that I can deliver on this, what is more I am confidant that this project will help develop my skills as a designer.
I will be playtesting the campaign as I go along, devising my work into 2 week 'sprints, where 2 weeks go into a single session of the game and then it is revised based on feedback and properly written up. WIth luck I should be able to keep this going until the campaign is finished and I can begin polishing up a finished product.
I will see how I feel about this on Friday.
